Distillation Definition and Types of Distillation

Distillation Definition: Distillation is a method of purification in which a liquid is converted into vapor form and which is condensed back to liquid form. It is used in the separation of liquids from nonvolatile solids impurities. Moreover, it has wide application in the separation of the mixture of two or more liquids having different boiling points. Therefore, distillation is used when two or more liquids have sufficiently different boiling points otherwise liquids can’t be separated efficiently. It can be noted that distillation is not a chemical process but it is a physical process.

Types of Distillation

There are some types of distillation that are used in different conditions.

  1. Simple distillation
  2. Fractional distillation
  3. Steam distillation
  4. Vaccum distillation
  5. Zone distillation
